Girls’ Swimming & Diving

Welcome to the Chanhassen Storm Girls’ Swim and Dive team!

More Information

We have an awesome group of girls and a dedicated coaching staff! This is a competitive team with history of State Championship swimmers, but we need and value the contributions of every member of this team! In High School competition the girls swim as fast as they can to earn points for the team and also to improve their individual times. Relay events are a big part of High School swimming, providing more opportunities for girls to participate and contribute to the team. Swimming is a sport that rewards competitors of all levels for those who are willing to work hard. Everyone can achieve their own individual goals in this sport.

We welcome anyone who is willing to work hard and want to swim competitively, but new swimmers should be proficient in the freestyle and have some ability with the other three strokes: backstroke, butterfly & breaststroke. Getting in the water and swimming laps several weeks before the season begins is highly recommended. Better yet we hope all are girls will commit to join one of the several local swimming clubs in the area. Swimming is a great sport – one that you can do for the rest of your life. The practices can be hard, but the girls also have a lot of fun and develop many lasting friendships.

Swim practices usually starts the third week in August and both Varsity & Junior Varsity (JV) practice together. All practices are mandatory! Once the season starts the Storm will usually have at least one swim meet a week against West Metro Conference teams on a Tuesday or Thursday night. Conference meets are almost always from 6-8:30 in the evening.

Varsity & JV participate in the same meet with Varsity and JV heats in each event. In general the faster swimmers will swim the more competitive Varsity and JV heats, but a certain number of extra heats are also added, as time will permit, to allow as many swimmers as possible to participate and post a time. The maximum number of heats any girl can swim in at a high school meet is four. The team also participates in an invitational meet or two. There is also a “True Team” Sections meet during the season. Varsity and JV swimmers, as selected by the coaches are invited to participate in these extra meets. The JV season ends with the JV Conference Championship meet near the end of October. Girls that are selected to the Varsity team go on to swim at the Sections meets in early November. Girls who qualify at the Section Finals move on to the State Tournament in Mid-November.

We look forward to seeing our returning athletes and can’t wait to meet our new athletes! Go Blue!
